Teenage Girl Convinced Boyfriend to Kill Himself
A Massachusetts teenager who convinced her boyfriend to commit suicide is now facing manslaughter charges.
The Washington Post reports that 18-year-old Michelle Carter texted her boyfriend Conrad Roy III thousands of times in the months before his death on July 13, 2014 and her last messages to the troubled teen were just moments before he took his life. Disturbingly, she encouraged him to carry out the deed, knowing full well he would die.
Roy killed himself by sitting in his truck and filling it with carbon monoxide. As he texted Carter during the ordeal, he said that he was afraid and would rather just go back inside and be with his family. The police report regarding the incident states that Carter told Roy to, "Get back in," according to the Post.
The police report gets even more chilling and says that Carter was also working on a plan to make her seem pitiable and sympathetic to her friends so that she could be the center of her social circle's and high school's attention.
Amazingly, Carter was so caught up in her own sick charade that she spent the next several months raising thousands of dollars for charities whose purpose was the prevention of suicide.
Carter is being charged as an adult, and her family contends that the media is unfairly making her out to be a villain, although she could have called Roy's parents, school officials, friends, mental health professionals, or the police in the months and moments immediately preceding Roy's death.
Roy apparently had a history of depression that he had battled, but his family believes that he could have been talked out of taking his own life.
As the case comes to trial more details are sure to come out, as a bit of mystery remains. For example, one of Roy's best friends said that he did not even know Carter and Roy were dating at the time.
