‘Straight Outta Compton’ Movie Screening will have Added Security
Universal has offered to reimburse movie theaters for added security at the "Straight Outta Compton" opening weekend screenings, several theater executives stated, reported by the Wall Street Journal.
The decision was made due to the recent shootings at movie theaters Last month, a gunman shot and killed two women during a screening of Amy Schumer's "Trainwreck" inside of a Louisiana theater. Shortly after the L.A. shooting, a 29-year-old man entered a movie theater in Tennessee with a fake gun during a screening of "Mad Max: Fury Road." The police found items that could have made an explosive in the man's backpack. The man was shot dead by the police.
James Holmes, who killed 12 people inside of a theater in Aurora, CO during the screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," was sentenced to life in prison without parole on Aug. 7.
"I don't think it's really necessary, but we're doing it for the public's peace of mind," a theater owner in Kansas City and Portland told the Journal.
The racial tensions within the nation, particularly in Ferguson, Mo, also prompted movie theaters to consider adding more security.
"Straight Outta Compton" is a biographical film based on the emergence of the group, N.W.A, created by Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. The movie follows the members' journey and how they revolutionized hip-hop via their gritty tales of living in the hood. The movie also features a lot of gang violence and police brutality.
The film's Monday night premiere in Los Angeles was peaceful. However, as a precaution, there was a lot of security, which included metal detectors and street closures within the area.
"Straight Outta Compton" opens in theaters on Aug. 14. The movie is expected to bring in $40 to $50 million in the box office.
