Parts of Upstate New York experiencing over 6 inches of show
A gigantic snowstorm has passed through upstate New York, claiming several lives and left thousands stranded along highways and inside homes as temperatures hover below freezing.
The area most affected is Buffalo and the worst is not over yet with more snow expected today, as officials frantically try to clear massive truckloads of snow from the area.
Buffalo Mayor Byron B. Brown asked city residents to adhere to a travel ban in the south portion of the city, according to ABC News.
At Buffalo Niagara International Airport, where official records are recorded, weather service officials said only 6.2 inches of snow fell over the last 48 hours. But in the suburbs of Gardenville and West Seneca as much as 60 inches of snow has fallen since Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
Snow plunged off one family's roof with such force that it blew in the back door, filling a room with snow, according to the Boston Globe.
"It was a huge crash. We all started running back there. We actually thought that it was the roof coming down in the house," said Chrissy Gritzke Hazard, who was home with her husband, five children and three of her children's friends Tuesday. "We were definitely not expecting it to be the doors blown out, the frame, everything, inside the house."
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a State of Emergency Wednesday for counties most affected by the weather. Erie County officials identified a fifth storm-related death.
