Android Lollipop Update Arrives On Nexus 4 Smartphones; Flash Guide For Quick Update

Google has finally started pushing out its most-awaited Android 5.0 Lollipop update to 2012's flagship Nexus 4 smartphone in its standard OTA method.

Google, the world's largest internet search company and mobile OS provider, is updating its two-year-old flagship smartphone, the LG Nexus 4, with the latest build of Android OS. Owners of Nexus 4 can update their handsets to Android 5.0 Lollipop via traditional OTA (over-the-air) style and take advantage of the slew of new features that come along. The roll-out comes just days after the Android's official Twitter account shared the status of Lollipop roll-out to most Nexus devices last week.

This is certainly great news for Nexus 4 owners, who were kept in the dark about the new software's roll out. With the update, the older flagship joins the latest fleet of Nexus devices, including the Nexus 5, 9 and 7 devices, in getting the Android Lollipop update. Although the roll-out has begun, all Nexus 4 owners around the world will have to wait for a week or two as it goes without saying that the software roll-out will be phased according to the device's location and carrier.

If the wait seems longer, then there is an alternate to get the update early but it requires some extra hard work. Factory images for Nexus devices can help users move from existing KitKat update to Lollipop by following the official instructions laid out by Google.

Flashing and installing the new software will erase the pre-loaded data on the device, so it is recommended that users back up important files before going ahead. The device must be started in "fastboot mode" for flash and users can use a bootloader to install the image file from the desktop to a smartphone or tablet. If the steps appear tricky, users can always wait for the simple over-the-air update to get the latest software, which simply requires users to navigate into the phone's Settings menu and find the Software update option under About device.

Updating the software on Nexus 5 devices has resulted in some Wi-Fi related issues.
