The PlayStation 4, which has been outselling Xbox for a while now, has cemented its status as the top gaming console after it was revealed that more than 25 million have been sold since its release.

Forbes reports that PS4 sales were more than double Xbox's in the second-quarter of 2015, and PS4 sales increased by 2.7 million when compared to the second-quarter of 2014, bringing the total number of PS4 units sold to 25.3 million

This growth is astounding when compared to the PlayStation 2, which took more than two years, two years and 8 months to be exact, to past the 20 million mark.

Sony believes that for all of fiscal 2015, it will sell 16.5 million PlayStations. If that prophecy is fulfilled, Sony will have sold a total of nearly 40 million PS4 units. The company sold 14.8 million PS4s in 2014.

These sales translated into big profits for Sony, with the PlayStation division of its business earning $160 million in profit from sales of $2.4 billion. Across all of its business units, Sony recorded a profit of $676 million from $15 billion in sales.

Microsoft was left in the dust by Sony, selling only 1.4 million units of both its Xbox One and Xbox 360 systems. Which means that both systems combined only amounted to half of the PS4's performance.

It wasn't all bad news for Microsoft as that figure actually represented an increase of 27 percent in second-quarter sales when compared to 2014.
