Rovio Entertainment has announced that the sequel to the original 'Angry Birds' will be released on the 30th of July.

The company promises that 'Angry Birds 2' will "Bigger. Badder. Birdier".

The original Angry Birds was launched in 2009 and has since been downloaded more than 3 billion times.

At its peak in 2012, the game was played by more than 263 million monthly active users before the numbers fell to 200 million as of September 2014.

During the last 6 years, the company also rolled out a number of Angry Birds spinoffs. These include titles like Angry Birds Star Wars, Angry Birds Stella, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio.

Even as all of Rovio's recent games have been free-to-play, the company has struggled to maintain its position in the upper reaches of app stores which features a number of highly popular games like clash of clans and candy crush saga.

In October 2014, Rovio announced its plans to lay off 16% of its staff while admitting that "we have been building our team on assumptions of faster growth than have materialised".

Meanwhile Angry Birds 2 could provide the much needed jolt for the company and boost sales.
