Tesla Motors says it will now be adding the new 'Ludicrous Mode' upgrade to its Model S electric sedans.

The supercharged option has been designed to enable drivers to accelerate from zero to sixty in 2.8 seconds.

The blistering pace is said to make the car even quicker than certain high performance models like the Ferrari, Porsche or Lamborghini.

CEO of Tesla Motors announced on Friday that the upgrade will cost $10,000 for interested buyers of the Model S car, which has a base price of $70,000.

"It's just like having your own roller coaster. You can't hide that light under a bushel, " said Elon Musk.

The upgrade also comes with a $3,000 battery pack that will enable lower end Tesla cars to improve drive range efficiency by 5 percent or 15 miles per charge. The car can ideally be driven for about 300 miles on a highway on a single battery charge.

The name 'ludicrous mode' has been inspired from Mel Brook's 'Spaceballs' which was a spoof of the popular 'Star Wars' movie franchise. The reference comes from a spaceship in Brook's film where it managed to surpass the speed of light by travelling so fast that it turns into plaid.

Meanwhile the next version of the Roadster car is said to have 'maximum plaid' speed and will not be available for another four years.
