Samsung has wrested its position as the top sales vendor in the US with Galaxy S6 sales, after losing ground to Apple April this year.

According to Kantar Worldpanel Comtech, iPhone remained the best-selling phone for the quarter ending May with Samsung S5 and S6 at second and third place. Most of Galaxy S6 sales came from existing Samsung users replacing an old device.

"As is often the case with flagship products, the vast majority of Samsung Galaxy S6 sales came from consumers replacing an older smartphone at 94.4%, versus 5.6% of first time smartphone buyers," Kantar notes.

Nearly a third of people who bought the Galaxy S6 were Verizon customers while 27.2 percent and 26.6 percent were AT&T and Sprint subscribes respectively.

Contrastingly, ZDnet reported that Samsung's profits could fall by 24 percent year on year in the second quarter of 2015, overturning expectations that Galaxy S6 would help the company return to profitability.

While Samsung Galaxy S6's sales helped Android share of market to increase, NDTV reported that Android's market position did not improve in major European markets where Apple iPhone 6 reigns supreme.
