New York Fugitives Wanted to Flee To Mexico With Prison Tailor

Fugitive David Sweat, who was nabbed Sunday, revealed that he and accomplice Richard Matt had planned to flee to Mexico.

Sweat was shot before being caught by cops. His condition was upgraded to critical on Monday though he is said to be stable, according to USA Today. Gov. Andrew Cuomo informed that the duo's plan was to kill prison tailor Mitchell Joyce's husband and steal his car to drive to Mexico. Mitchell, who is accused of aiding the duo with the escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility June 6, did not show up forcing the prisoners to change plans.

CNN reported that the duo then headed north and planned to escape to Canada. Sweat and Matt were together for five days when the former decided to go ahead alone as 49-year old Matt was slowing him down. Matt was killed on Friday. Sweat was chased and shot while fleeing across a barn in the town of Constable, located close to the Canadian border.

"They would kill (tailor Joyce) Mitchell's husband, and then get in the car and drive to Mexico on the theory that Mitchell was in love with one or both of them. And then they would go live happily ever after, which is a fairy tale that I wasn't read as a child. But we all believe what we want to believe," Cuomo told The Capitol Pressroom.
