Kurds Secure Kobane After ISIS Assault
Kurdish forces have once again secured the Syrian town of Kobane on the Turkish border after a brutal assault by the Islamic State.
Al Jazeera reports that the terrorist group deliberately killed at least 300 civilians in the attack and the assault was reportedly retribution for when Kurdish forces first took over Kobane earlier in early 2015 and a string of recent victories against ISIS the Kurds have secured.
ISIS reportedly also took at least 50 hostages in an effort to continue their terrorizing of the Kurdish population. At least 150 people have crossed into Turkey to receive medical care, according to the Turkish government.
The ISIS fighters did not mount a frontal assault, but instead slowly infiltrated the town over an unspecified period of time. They were disguised in the uniforms of Kurdish militias and the Free Syrian Army, one of the many rebels groups fighting in Syria.
The assault was well-planned, with fighter surreptitiously taking up positions at key locations such as a local hospital, a secondary school, and two buildings within the vicinity of a popular mosque.
The attacks started around 4 a.m. June 25 and included suicide bombings and random shootings. Adding to the chaos was the fact that the attackers would yell in Kurdish that they were there to help. The ISIS fighters would then kill any civilians who responded to their calls and went to them seeking protection.
The terrorists would also go from door to door saying they would help a house's occupants, and then when they were let inside of a home, kill all the members of the family present.
