2014 Moto G Beats Nexus Devices In Lollipop Race: Android 5.0 Update
Motorola's second generation Moto G became the first handset to receive the final version of Android Lollipop, while other flagships and Nexus series lag behind.
In what is seen as an unexpected move, Motorola's second generation Moto G smartphone became the first phone to get a final version of the Android 5.0 update. The budget phone also beat prioritized handsets in the Nexus series and the newly-launched Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 devices by getting the final version of the update early. According to a report by ARS Technica, the Lollipop firmware update was rolled out to Moto G phones in the U.S. on Wednesday.
The first roll-out, which is also confirmed by Motorola's official release notes, means the Lollipop is headed to Nexus and other flagships under Motorola's branding in the coming days. The potential devices that will receive the latest update include the second-gen Moto X, LG G3 along with some Nexus devices.
"We are excited to announce a new software update for Moto G (2nd Generation) by Motorola. This update brings Android 5.0 Lollipop to your phone along with other improvements," Motorola said in the release notes.
Updating the new Moto G with Lollipop brings a slew of new features and improvements such as the much-talked about Material Design UI, lock screen notifications, redesigned Overview space, Ambient Display to show notifications without turning on the full display, Motorola Assist, improved battery life, better performance, Smart Lock and security and lot more.
The update hasn't arrived on the older Moto G but it is expected to come alongside 2013 and 2014 Moto X, Moto E, the Droid Ultra, Maxx, and Mini.
Owners of the new Moto G devices can check for software updates by navigating into the Settings menu and About Phone. The update weighs 386.7MB and be sure to connect to a secure Wi-Fi to avoid exceeding your data limit on the carrier's plan. Once updated, the phone build must show version 22.11.6.
