Facebook has enabled users without an account to sign up for its Messenger app with a phone number, the company announced Wednesday. The move is next step towards broadening the app's reach and making it a standalone platform.

After the latest update, users will be prompted by an option that would say "Not on Facebook?" when they first time launch the app. Clicking on that would allow them to signup for the service with just the name, phone number and a profile photo.

Facebook Messenger has 600 million users and in the recent months, the social networking giant has added a number of new features including games and video calling on the app itself.
