New York Prison Escape Update: Manhunt Team Finds Fugitives' DNA in Upstate New York
New York police found DNA of fugitives, Richard Matt and David Sweat, in a cabin in upstate Franklin County.
According to CNN, the DNA was found among items in a cabin the escapees could have burglarized. The whereabouts of the duo two weeks after they escaped remained untraceable, until recently. After a witness spotted a man running into the woods near the cabin on Saturday, the manhunt shifted to the county which is just about 30 miles from Clinton Correctional Facility.
While law enforcement agencies confirmed the spotting is a lead, further details remained unavailable. The police are confident that the duo has no support network to get away and they had robbed the cabin in desperation for supplies.
The police have also alerted people of Franklin County to remain vigilant as the fugitives could be a potential threat in their bid to evade the law. The convicts had escaped using tools supplied from outside the prison, before escaping through a manhole.
Richard Matt, 49 was sentenced to 25 years in prison for kidnapping and dismembering a former boss in 1997 while David Sweat was sentenced to life without parole for killing a deputy sheriff in 2002, HNGN reports.
