Firefly Music Festival Cancelled Due To Intense Lightning And Other Weather Disturbances; Kings Of Leon Performance Rescheduled The Following Day
Firefly Music Festival organizers had to order thousands of concertgoers to evacuate the concert area at Woodlands in Dover, Delaware on Saturday in compliance with an earlier Severe Thunderstorm Warning.
According to NBC Philadelphia organizers have to end the performance by Kings of Leon around 10pm with a message in their official Twitter page informing the public that 'storms are heading our way.'
"Severe weather is heading our way. If at The Woodlands, clear the festival grounds, head towards the exit & seek shelter in your vehicles," the post said.
Organizers also issued an announcement for campers to take down tents and canopies and tents in the area. A new schedule stating that the cancellation of all night performances was also released.
The evacuation started 15 minutes after Kings of Leon's schedule to play on stage, Delaware Online said. Before that, an announcer on stage urged people to evacuate the area further posting in a big projector flashing a tornado announcement.
While most concertgoers kept their calm even with the early drops of rainfall, some also complained about the evacuation protocol set by the organizers.
"Firefly has been great about sending a cart to take us places, but when the evacuation came my friend had to carry me out. There was no way to drive a cart through everyone freaking out," Rebecca Martinez-Grieve, who is in the disability camping area, said.
Kings of Leon also experienced a similar performance cancellation in 2013 Kings at the Governors Ball Music Festival due to torrential rains, Billboard said.
The band then made up their cancelled show on Saturday afternoon at the New York festival.
