Hitler Paintings Sold at Auction
Paintings believed to have been created by Adolf Hitler have sold at auction for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The Guardian reports that the 14 paintings sold for roughly $450,000. The paintings were watercolors and their subjects ranged from Bavarian castles nestled in the Alps to still lifes of flowers, and a portrait of a nude woman. The paintings were created between 1904 and 1922.
All of the paintings were signed by A. Hitler, leading many to speculate they are indeed the work of Adolph Hitler, who was a failed artists before he began his political career that would ultimately change world history while Europe and much of the rest of the world in ruins.
Critics have described his style as boring and unoriginal, which is why he failed in pursuing art as a career. This fact also makes it easy for people to forge works and claim they are by Hitler, making it even more difficult to establish the authenticity of such paintings.
The artworks were sold by the Weidler auction house. The house said they were purchased by international investors who viewed the purchases as a means to make more money in the future.
Bidders for the works hailed from around world, including China, France, Brazil, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates.
This auction was the third of Hitler's artworks since 2009.
The head of the Weidler auction house said that he would give some of the money raised to charity, but many charities and social groups balked at the suggestion, saying they wanted nothing to do with any money raised off the infamy of one of history's most notorious mass murderers and dictators.
