DuckDuckGo, a privacy minded search engine, grew 600% since NSA surveillance news broke. The search engine is now handling three billion searches a year.

"We're doing about three billion searches a year," said DuckDuckGo CEO Gabe Weinberg said in an interview with CNBC, "so we're already pretty mainstream."

Browsers Firefox and Safari also made DuckDuckGo available last year.

DuckDuckGo was added to Firefox in November last year as part of enhanced privacy options. Apple has also added it as an option in Safari.
