Jeni's Reports Listeria Contamination Again, Stops Production

Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream has found listeria in its kitchen, just a month after it reopened following sanitization operations.

The ice cream maker had found the bacteria earlier this year and had shut its production facility and retail outlets. After it reopened last month, Jeni's has been testing all its ice cream before serving. The latest case of infection was found before the ice cream reached consumers, the company said in a statement.

"Since resuming production in our kitchen on May 13, 2015, we have been testing every batch of ice cream we have made and holding it until we learned that the testing did not detect any Listeria. So it is with complete confidence that I can say all of the ice cream that has been served in our shops since reopening on May 22 has been safe and is 100% Listeria-free," the company said.

Jeni's has closed its production facility to identify the source of infection. It also announced closing of its scoop stores as the company does not have enough ice cream to stock.

Listeria contamination has plagued the ice cream industry this year. Blue Bell was forced to recall its products and shutdown its production line in Texas after CDC linked it to several cases of illness.
