Country singer Randy Howard was killed on Tuesday after being involved in a gun fight with a bounty hunter.

Howard was said to be at his home in Lynchburg, Tennessee when the bounty hunter arrived at his doorstep and attempted to detain the singer for missing a court appearance.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) spokesperson Josh Devine said that the bounty hunter shot back and killed the 65 year old singer when he first opened fire.

The bounty hunter had a warrant on Howard charging him with a fourth offense DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a revoked license and possession of a firearm while being intoxicated.

The TBI is currently investigating the shooting incident on Tuesday night.

Howard was a member of country music's "Outlaw" movement, which rejected Nashville's polished music in favor of a rougher sound.

He came up with his own take on Johnny Cash's 'Ring of Fire' which cracked the country's music charts in 1988.

Over the years, Howard has shared the stage with a number of popular country singers like Hank Williams Jr, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

Hank Williams posted a photo of the two of them smiling together with the words, "RIP Randy Howard."
