Facebook Unveils Facebook Lite: Lighter Version of Facebook (For Android Only)

Facebook has launched a new Android app that is faster, smaller and lighter on data but has all the features of its full app. Called Facebook Lite, it uses less data and runs faster in areas with spotty connections.

Right now, Facebook Lite is available in countries across Asia, and is expected to make its way to parts of Latin America, Africa and Europe.

The app has been specifically designed for regions where people still use 2G and have spotty network connection.

"We want to offer people a choice so if there are limitations, they can still get the full Facebook experience," Vijay Shankar, product manager for Facebook Lite said in an interview.

Reportedly, the app uses less than one-half of a megabyte of data to limit data usage and rates for those in emerging markets. The app supports basic Facebook features like News Feed, status updates, notifications and photos but no videos and location services.

Considering that many parts of Britain and the US struggle with poor data connections, especially in densely populated cities and rural areas with weak signal, a lighter, more streamlined Facebook app that works when all others don't could make it a very attractive prospect, Guardian noted.
