Boat captain Randy Llanes, 47, was killed on Friday when he tried to catch a swordfish with his spear gun in Hawaii.

Llanes who owns a deep sea fishing water jumped in the water after spotting a broadbill swordfish near the Honokohau harbour.

After being struck with Lanes' spear gun, the six feet long forty pound fish "thrashed about, leaving a puncture wound to his upper chest." He was then impaled by the bill of the fish.

West Hawaii Acting Battalion Chief John Whitman said Llanes had a deep puncture wound in right upper torso and was found to be floating on the water when the paramedics arrived.

He was later pronounced dead when taken to the Kona Community Hospital.

Hawaii has been known to be a major source of swordfish in the US and they are feared by the locals for their ability to violently slash with their bills.

Llanes was considered by friends and fisherman as a veteran in the fishing industry. During his memorial, people swam up to the spot where he had been killed and honored his memory by bringing a traditional Hawaiian lei with them.
