NBA Rumors: New Orleans Pelicans Interview Vinny Del Negro for Coaching Position

Could Vinny Del Negro be the next head coach for the New Orleans Pelicans?

According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski with Yahoo! Sports, the Pelicans reportedly interviewed Del Negro for the head coach position. Del Negro, who played in the NBA for 13 years, has previously coached for the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Clippers.

Overall, he has four playoff appearances within the span of five seasons. In LA, he helped the team win 56 games, which was the highest for the organization at that time (2011-12). Throughout his NBA coaching career, Del Negro has a 210-184 record. He is also known for his ability to develop young players.

Del Negro left the Clippers in 2013 and has been an analyst on NBA TV.

The head coaching position at the Pelicans is considered one of the most highly sought after job this offseason. The Pelicans, who made it to the playoffs this season, have an explosive player, Anthony Davis, who was just named to the All-NBA First Team. Davis has only been in the league for three years.

In the playoffs, the Pelicans were swept in the first round by the Golden State Warriors, who are headed to the Finals next week.

The Pelicans are reportedly also looking at Alvin Gentry, the assistant for the Golden State Warriors and Jeff Van Gundy, the former coach of the New York Knicks.

Sports writer/editor Josh Hill at Fansided believes that the Pelicans will ultimately hire Tom Thibodeau.

Hill wrote, "The real story here is that the Pelicans are probably going to hire Tom Thibodeau, and they're just cycling through candidates in the meantime. There's no guarantee that they're going to hire Thibodeau, but the chances that doesn't happen don't seem to be very high."

Thibodeau was fired by the Chicago Bulls on Thursday.
