Google, at the I/O 2015 unveiled a brand new service for storing and managing photos and videos, called Google Photos. The service offers unlimited storage for images and videos free of cost. Here are few things you should know about it:
- The service is completely free and unlimited, which means that you can store as many photos and videos you want and it will store full resolution versions of your memories for free. However, the caveat is Google is restricting photos to 16-megapixel and videos to 1080p. Anything bigger will be downscaled.
- The service is completely independent of Google Plus, the company's attempt at creating a social network that failed to take off.
- Google Photos automatically recognizes and group photos of people, places and things without you needing to tell it. It is expert in recognizing faces even with changing age.
- Google Photos app can also recognize objects in images. So if you search of 'doors' or 'smartphones' it will return all photos containing these objects. It can also recognize specific breeds of dogs.
- Google Photos also comes with a built-in editor that lets users touch-up photos.
- Google Photos also lets users share pictures with anyone even if they don't use Google Photos.
