NBA Rumors: Wizards Paul Pierce might Opt out of Contract to Join the LA Clippers
The latest NBA rumor is claiming that Washington Wizards Paul Pierce might choose to opt out of the final year in his contract so that he can join the Los Angeles Clippers.
Pierce spoke to reporters after his season ended and judging solely on the content of his answer, it seems like Pierce is ready to walk away from Washington.
"Truthfully, what was going through my mind is, I don't have too much of these efforts left, if any," Pierce said. "These rides throughout the NBA season, throughout the playoffs, are very emotional. They take a lot out of not only your body, but your mind, your spirit.... I don't even know if I'm going to play basketball anymore."
The 37-year-old who had a good season will most likely not retire just yet. David Aldridge wrote via NBA.com that Pierce might be interested in finishing out his career at home in California.
Aldrige wrote, "Washington's main issue is complacency. The Wizards could stand pat if Pierce decides to return to D.C. next season rather than opt out of his deal, but many around the league believe Pierce will do just that and finish his career back home in Los Angeles with the Clippers."
The TNT analyst added, "Maybe Paul Pierce will walk away from the second year of his deal ($5.5 million) in Washington in order to finish his career in his hometown, playing for his old Celtics coach and his former teammate-turned-Clippers assistant Sam Cassell for less money."
Pierce was coached by Doc Rivers, the current coach of the Clippers, from 2004 to 2013 when the duo was a part of the Boston Celtics.
Despite these rumors, Pierce could very well stay in Washington. He has spoken highly of the team, his teammates and the city throughout this season.
Pierce averaged 11.9 points with four rebounds and two assists. In 10 playoff games this year, Pierce averaged 14.6 points and shot just over 50 percent from the three-point range. He has been playing in the NBA since 1998.
