Johnny Deep's Dog Smuggling Pirate Act in Australia Could Earn Him 10-Year Imprisonment
Actor Johnny Depp's pirate act to smuggle his Yorkshire Terriers into Australia may earn him 10-year imprisonment.
According to E Online Depp smuggled in Boo and Pistol, his two dogs when he landed in Australia in a private jet in April for filming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The passengers on board did not declare the dogs, breaking Australia's strict quarantine laws. When images of the dogs at a local grooming shop appeared on social media, the Australian government grew furious and its agriculture minister threatened to put down the animals unless the actor shipped them out. Left without choice, the actor complied and shipped his dogs to California within 50 hours of the government's dictum.
On Monday, an Australian Senate Committee was told that the actor could be handed 10-year jail time and a hefty fine of $ 340,000, should the matter go to court.
"This matter is ongoing, as the police would tell you. It's being investigated; handbags are being searched. No rock or backpack is being left unturned," immigration minister Peter Dutton had said during a recent interview.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Depp's pilot could also face up to two years in prison for not declaring the dogs.
