Women at Cambridge University Boo 'Sexist' Jelly Fights Organized by Men
A jelly-fight organized by a Cambridge University drinking society has drawn the ire of women students.
The fight is being organized by Gentleman Wyverns, an all-male drinking society at Magdalene College, at its Suicide Sunday Garden Party on June 14. Jelly fights mostly involve scantily clad women tussle in a pool of jelly.
The society has reportedly said that jelly fight is being introduced as a sport and is not a ruse to get women down to their bikinis, adding that men will also participating this time.
Given that it was scrapped last time after more than thousand petitions termed it sexist and misogynist, it is not surprising that the society's move to reintroduce the event has run into opposition.
"Just because the men are now allowed to join in doesn't erase what jelly wrestling means to those who attend the event, and those who feel threatened by it....Sure, the odd guy might join in, but realistically most competitors will be attractive bikini-clad women...Do we really believe that male and female competitors will receive the same response from the male-dominated crowd?," an undergraduate woman student wrote in the Cambridge Student Newspaper.
