Instagram 'Highlights' Email Digest Is Not Being Welcomed
Aging Instagram is trying its best to win everyone back with email digest, Highlights. The photo-sharing website will send email with 'Highlights' of best pics to users.
Instagram's move is being seen as an attempt to re-engage people who have drifted away from the social network.
Instagram, like Twitter, offers update in reverse-chronological order - most recent posts are showed first, which necessarily might not be the most relevant.
This is an effective way to keep user's news feed fresh but it's risky as user might miss the most interesting content, due to constant stream of updates being updated simultaneously.
Instagram's email updates are designed to offer a more curated experience, presenting users with only the most popular content from their network of contacts, TechCrunch reported.
According to the company, this is the first time it has sent any kind of promotional or re-engagement emails to its users, although its parent company Facebook uses email notifications to alert users to new activity on the site.
Instagram is not the first to send the 're-engagement' messages. Twitter also sends email digests, informing users of tweets that might have been missed otherwise.
The new email-digest initiative could help Instagram remind people what they're missing when they don't use the service.
