Uber's experimental self-driving car was spotted on the public roads of Pittsburgh, around its new institute at Carnegie Mellon University, the Center for Advanced Technologies (CAT).

On the side of the vehicle, the words "Uber Advanced Technologies Center" could be spotted clearly.

"This vehicle is part of our early research efforts regarding mapping, safety and autonomy systems," said an Uber spokeswoman.

The development doesn't come as a surprise. Uber, earlier this year had announced the partnership with the university to open an advanced technologies center in the city to focus on technology such as mapping and driverless vehicles.

The company recently posted job openings for its CAT, looking for "motion planning engineers" among other research positions.

Uber is not the only company to explore driverless vehicles technology. Traditional car makers like Volvo is also testing similar vehicles. Google and Apple are also trying their stake in the market.

Analysts believe, by eliminating the need to hire a driver, Uber could reduce costs by as much as 34 cents a mile.
