Cavs to sign Andrew Wiggins; Must wait to do Love deal
While reports continue to circle about a possible trade between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves, the Cavs appear to be on the verge of signing No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins.
According to ESPN, citing sources, the Cavs plan to sign Wiggins this week. If signed he'll make about $5.5 million in his rookie season.
There was speculation the Cavs waited this long to sign their No. 1 pick because they were trying to package him in a deal for the Wolves' Kevin Love. If Wiggins is signed then the Cavaliers have to wait 30 days before they can move him, per NBA rules. However sources tell ESPN the Cavaliers patience in signing Wiggins had nothing to do with Love. The sources say the team was instead trying to explore all their options before signing the rookie.
If the Cavs were simply looking to the future, they might want to keep Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and their 2015 first round pick (the pieces reportedly being offered for Love). Wiggins ceiling is very high and the Cavs have already boasted of improvements in Bennett, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.
However, the Cavs are pressed to win now. Brian Windhorst tweets:
LeBron intrigued w/Andrew Wiggins' potential but has made clear to Cavs he wants to compete for title now. Going after Love fits message
Kevin Love instantly adds star talent to the Cavs and arguably propels them to the best team in the Eastern Conference with a Big 3 of LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Love. The T-Wolves star adds consistent three-point shooting and superstar caliber rebounding. This gives James someone to spread the floor and help him on the boards.
The Cavs could lose Love to the Golden State Warriors if the Warriors decide to give up Klay Thompson as part of a package. According to reports this deal is more attractive to the Wolves because head coach and president of basketball operations for the Wolves Flip Saunders wants to compete as soon as possible. Klay Thompson - in a package that would likely include star power forward David Lee - would be able to help the Wolves compete quickly as opposed to a package that includes Wiggins and Bennett.
According to ESPN's Chris Broussard, the Warriors are currently offering Lee and third year forward/guard Harrison Barnes.
