NFL Rumors: Is QB E.J Manuel ‘Done’ in Buffalo?
Quarterback E.J Manuel might "be done" in Buffalo, a new report coming from Joe Buscagilia of WKBW claimed.
According to the report, the former first-round pick might not start his third year in the league if he does not impress the team during the offseason.
Buscagilia wrote Monday, "If former first-round pick and quarterback EJ Manuel doesn't show some serious progress this spring and summer at OTAs, minicamp and training camp, he very well may be enjoying his final few months in Buffalo as a member of the organization."
Manuel completed only 58.6 percent of his passes since entering the NFL. He has thrown 12 interceptions in 15 games.
Despite this latest report, the Bills' roster is not exactly stacked with reliable quarterbacks. The Bills acquired Matt Cassel from the Minnesota Vikings and have backups Jeff Tuel and Tyrod Taylor.
Jesse Reed with FOXSports.com wrote, "With Matt Cassell as the likely starter and Taylor as his backup, perhaps the brass in Buffalo feel Manuel is expendable at this point. If the young quarterback does get cut before the season begins, it won't be long before he lands with a new team. Though he was clearly overdrafted in the first place, he's still worth developing under the right circumstances."
Michael David Smith with NBCSports.com added, "For the Bills to cut Manuel, they'd have to conclude not only that he's not good enough to beat out Matt Cassel to be the starter, but also that he's not good enough to beat out Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Tuel to be the backups. And they'd have to conclude that Manuel is so bad that they'd rather pay him not to be on the roster at all than pay him to stand on the sideline holding a clipboard. If there's really a chance of that, Manuel must look even worse behind closed doors than he looks on the field."
If Manuel is cut, the Bills will still have to pay his full base salary, which is worth $2.8 million.
