Chuck Norris And Wife Honoured For Helping Thousands Of Houston Kids
On Thursday, Crime Stoppers of Houston ran into hero Chuck Norris. He showed rare heroism and was honoured in an annual "Houston Heroes Awards Luncheon," in which Eyewitness News anchor Dave Ward emceed the program, according to abc13.
Norris' wife thanked all her supporters in her Facebook page.
Norris had been a screen hero in more than 24 movies, and TV shows "Walker, Texas Ranger." But now the martial artist and actor plays probably the most moving role of his career.
Kickstart Kids to support students in the Houston area was started in 1992 by Norris and his wife Gena. "What we're finding is that Kickstart Kids is still a secret here in Texas," Gena Norris said.
Yet, the program has spread around into 51 schools, roping in more than 7,500 students.
"School violence is cut down, so are bullying, teen pregnancy and gangs activity," Chuck Norris said.
The whole program started with karate for beginners to black belt shows.
"Come to one of our belt ceremonies and see these kids receive their upper grade belt. It's the most impressive thing you'll ever see," Chuck Norris said.
While last year, their program managed to help 80,000 children to graduate in the last 22 years, the Norrises call for help from the public. "We need partners at all levels. We need them from the community level to corporate sponsors to make this happen," Gena Norris said.
