Woman Dies in Plane Crash in Costco Parking Lot
One woman involved in a plane crash in a Costco car park in San Diego has died, confirmed authorities. Another woman piloting the plane is grievously injured.
The flight had only two occupants, both women.
The single engine Mooney M-20L crashed around 5:30 p.m. near Montgomery Field. It landed to rest in between two buildings; the parking slot of a Costco store and a Target store in the Kearny Mesa section of the city, said Lee Swanson, spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, reports USA today.
Lt. Steve Behrendt said that the plane clipped the top of the Target store and hit a light pole before it came down in the parking slot.
Ian Gregor, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said the plane "bounced while landing at Montgomery Field around 5:25 p.m., continued westbound and crashed in a Costco parking lot.''
The plane caught fire and another helicopter pilot said he heard the pilot inform the tower that the flight had lost power and it was going down, reports UTSanDiego.com.
Swanson said that two witness who were at the spot reached for help and took the victims to hospital, reports Los Angeles Times.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
