Two Students Hospitalized when School Bus Comes under Gunfire

Two students are in the hospital after their school bus was fired upon.

News 4 Jax reports that the police are searching for two teenage males who opened fire on the bus as it made its daily rounds on the west side of Jacksonville, FL. Two female students were injured in the shooting, which took place at around 4:15 p.m.

The bus driver drove another quarter mile before calling 911 in an effort to ensure that the bus would not again be subjected to gunfire.

The girls have been hospitalized at UF Health Jacksonville and are in stable condition. The girls' families have been notified and are said to be with them in the hospital.

First Coast News reports that one of the victims, Shakayla Singleton, was shot in the face but is expected to survive. She is a student at James Weldon Johnson Academy Career Training Center.

The bus the victims were riding serves students from three local schools. In addition to the James Weldon Johnson Academy, the bus carried students from Grand Park Center and Mattie V. Rutherford Alternative Education Center.

The identity of the other victim and the school she attended have not yet been made public.

A heavy police presence descended on the area around the shooting, with some officers toting rifles. Police are said to have been stationed at every intersection in the vicinity of the shooting.

Police are asking anyone who might know anything about the shooting to call into the local crime tips hotline.
