NHL Playoffs: Tampa Bay Lightning Ryan Callahan out after Appendectomy
Ryan Callahan will not be able to play in Game 6 of the series against the Montreal Canadiens after having an emergency appendectomy. There is no return time for the Tampa Bay Lightning right wing.
The team announced that Callahan was admitted to Tampa General Hospital Monday night after he complained of abdominal pain. He underwent surgery and will not be able to help the Lightning, who were angry and frustrated after losing two straight games against the Canadiens, close out the series.
"There was a genuine pissed-off attitude that we lost Game 5," coach Jon Cooper said. "Guys were angry and it's carried over, so I like our mojo. I want to be an angry team."
In 12 playoff appearances, Callahan has zero goals and three assists. He leads the team with a plus-7 rating. During the regular season, Callahan recorded 24 goals and 30 assists over 77 games.
The Lightning have fared well without Callahan in the regular season. They went 4-1 when Callahan was sidelined for five games due to a lower body injury back in October.
The Canadiens, however, will not go down easily and are more than ready to play Game 6.
"I see a team really excited, I see a team full of energy," coach Michel Therrien said Monday. "I think the excitement brings that energy to our team. I feel a team that can't wait to play tomorrow."
Therrien added, "We feel good to play those type of games. You look at our record the last two years when we had our back against the wall, it's almost like this is where we perform the best."
Callahan was traded to the Lightning from the New York Rangers. Callahan's current team and his former one could meet in the Eastern Conference finals if the Lightning win today and the Rangers win Game 7 against the Washington Capitals Wednesday night.
The Lightning are leading the series 3-2 and will host Game 6 of the Eastern Conference second round on May 12 at 7:30 PM ET.
