Apple CEO Tim Cook Joins China's Twitter-Like Social Network Weibo, Reveals Plans To Go Green In China
Earlier today (Monday) Apple CEO Tim Cook announced his arrival in Beijing over China's essential social network, Weibo. Purpose of Cook's visit is to unveil company's grand new environmental initiatives, designed to put the company on track to powering its operations with 100 percent renewable energy in the coming years.
Weibo has roughly 200 million active users each month and earlier this morning after Cook's account was verified, it managed to soar 320,000 followers.
"Happy to be back in Beijing, announcing innovative new environmental programs," read first tweet of Cook on the network.
The Cupertino-based company said it plans to green its Chinese Manufacturing facilities, an effort the company has already undertaken with its corporate offices, data centers, and Apple Stores worldwide.
"Apple is in a unique position to take the initiative toward this ambitious goal," Cook said in a statement. "It is a responsibility we accept. We are excited to work with leaders in our supply chain who want to be on the cutting edge of China's green transformation."
These latest initiatives come just three weeks after Apple announced its first solar project in China, two 20-megawatt solar farms that will generate up to 80 million kilowatt hours of clean energy per year, MacWorld mentioned.
Notably, China continues to be an increasingly important market for Apple. During its second quarter, it reported 71 percent revenue in the region and China accounted $16.8 billion of its revenues.
Reportedly, 90 percent of Chinese already own a smartphone.
