Rafael Nadal is out of the Top 5 for the First Time in 10 Years
Former world number one, Rafael Nadal has fallen out of the top five in the ATP rankings for the very first time in 10 years after losing to Andy Murray at the Madrid Masters in Spain.
During Sunday's final, Nadal, the two-time defending champion, was not able to over power Murray, losing 6-3, 6-2. This was the first time that the 28-year-old Nadal lost to Murray on a clay court. Murray won his very first clay title just a week ago in Munich.
"I haven't been able to play two weeks in a row, well, in the whole year," Nadal said. "Whatever will happen, will be. It's something that we have to realize, all of us, that what's happening during these last years, it's very complicated to be 10 or 11 years without leaving the top four."
"It's one of the hardest things in tennis to try and win against Rafa on clay, so I'm glad I've managed to do it," Murray said. "I made very few errors and changed the height of the ball extremely well, which was part of the reason why he was mistiming a few shots. I used the second serve into the forehand a lot and that worked well because I was able to get him moving. I dealt with all of the nervy moments I had in the match pretty well."
The loss in Madrid was Nadal's fourth overall on this surface, which is his favorite. In this year alone, Nadal has lost more matches on clay than he has in any season throughout his career since 2003, when he was just 16. Despite the lost, Nadal showed great form since his wrist injury. He did not drop a single set until the finals.
The last time Nadal was ranked outside of the top five was in May 2005 when he was seventh in the world. He is also ranked seventh now.
Nadal will compete for this 10th French Open title in two weeks. The Grand Slam tournament is on clay.
Before the major, Nadal will play in Rome this week. He is seeded No. 4 and is in the same half of the draw as former world number one, Roger Federer.
