NY Mets’ David Wright Suffering from Back Pain on Top of Hamstring Injury
There is no return timetable for New York Mets third baseman, David Wright.
The team announced that the Wright has been dealing with lower-back pain. Although an MRI showed no signs of structural damage, the pain could keep him on the disabled list longer than expected because he will not be able to partake in any kind of baseball activities, which include his rehabilitation workouts.
Despite the back pain news, Wright, 32, is recovering from his right hamstring injury at a very good pace. Wright was just examined at the Hospital for Special Surgery on Thursday. Once his back pain subsides, he will be able to finish his rehab, which has been taking place in Port St. Lucie.
Wright was off to a very good start this season, going 11-for-33 (.333) with one home run and a .796 OPS in eight games. The seven-time All-Star is making $20 million this season and is due $87 million through to 2020.
Since Wright was placed on the DL on April 14, Eric Campbell was called up to start at third. Campbell got off onto a good start but struggles more recently. He was sent back down to Triple-A Las Vegas this past Tuesday. In 16 games, he hit .200 with one home run and five RBIs.
Over the past few days, the Mets played second baseman Daniel Murphy at third while 21-year-old Dilson Herrera made the start at second.
The Mets (18-10) will begin a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies (10-19) Friday, May 8 at Citizens Bank Park at 7:05 p.m. ET.
