In the pursuit of the ultimate selfie, two tourists climbed atop the Loggia dei Militi and in the process broke off a piece of the marble crown which fell to the floor and shattered.

The 315 year old priceless sculpture is more commonly known as the 'Statue of Two Hercules' in Cremona and depicts the mythological hero holding a large shield.

For many centuries it sat atop the old gates and was often considered as the 'Emblem of Cremona.'

The statue was completed in 1700 before it was moved to its current location in 1962.

The tourists whose nationalities were not revealed are currently held in police custody.

Technicians were at the site many times to assess the damage to the sculpture.

This is not the first time tourists crossed a line when it came to clicking a simple selfie.

In March earlier this year, two tourists from the US carved their initials in at the Roman Coliseum and then proceeded to take selfies.
