NFL Reinstates Fred Davis, Tight End can now sign with any team
Former Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis is now eligible to sign with any team after the NFL reinstated him, ProFootballTalk reported.
Davis, 29, was suspended indefinitely for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy for a second time in February 2014. The league suspended him for taking a supplement that contained a banned substance. Davis had said that the substance was not marijuana, the drug that got him suspended the first time.
The veteran said in a statement at the time, "I would like to clarify the circumstances that resulted in my current suspension. In the past, I made the mistake of knowingly ingesting a banned substance. For over two years, I've worked very hard to eliminate marijuana from my life, and I have not had a positive test for it since 2011. Unfortunately, a couple of months ago I took a supplement that contained a banned substance."
One day after his suspension was announced, Davis was charged with driving while intoxicated in Virginia.
Davis was selected by the Redskins in the second round of the 2008 draft. From 2008 through to 2013, Davis recorded 163 receptions for 2,043 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Despite his early impressive stats, Davis sustained an Achilles tendon tear in 2012 and had a mediocre run in the 2013 season. His declining performance and off-the-field issues will make him an interesting unrestricted free agent this offseason.
