Salman Khan Trial Updates: Actor Granted Bail After Being Sentenced To 5 Years For Culpable Homicide In Hit And Run Crime
Salman Khan, one of the biggest stars in Bollywood, has been sentences to a five-year imprisonment thirteen years after he is found to be guilty of running over five people sleeping in a pavement outside a bakery in Bandra.
However, a report from Hindustimes said that the Bombay High Court granted him two-days bail until May 8 given that the court has not yet provided a copy of the lower court's order sentencing him.
His bail is said not to affect earlier decision made by court judge DW Deshpande proving the actor to be involved in culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
"You were driving the car without a licence and you were under the influence of alcohol," the judge announced amidst Khan's family members and journalists further explaining that the 49-year old actor, and not his driver Ashok Singh, has been proven to be the one driving his Toyota Land Cruiser and has perpetrated the accident.
He was also found to be under the influence of alcohol while driving.
BBC said that Salman Khan, who was involved in at least 81 Bollywood films, is expected to appeal against the verdict as this could pose a major setback in the actor's career.
Khan's family and friends who were present during the trial were also hoping for a lesser punishment of three years or less behind prison bars.
Meanwhile, senior lawyer Abha Singh said that the actor can appeal against the judgement but the court's decision is said to remain the same and will take the actor directly to jail, NBC News said.
"Finally, justice has been done. The law has been upheld," Singh, a petitioner in the case said.
In 2007, khan was also charged for shooting an endangered gazelle on a hunting trip.
