Islamic State In Control of Large Areas of Kobani , Says Monitoring Group
The Islamic State militants have taken control of more than a third of the Syrian border town of Kobani, said Britain based-Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Thursday.
The capture of Kobani would help the Islamic State to establish complete control over a large stretch of the Turkish-Syrian border.
"ISIS control more than a third of Kobani - all eastern areas, a small part of the northeast and an area in the southeast," said Rami Abdulrahman, director of the Observatory, reports Reuters.
The commander of Kobani's Kurdish fighters also confirmed that the Islamic State had major gains in the battle.
Kobani witnessed several explosions on Thursday and the Islamic State militants hoisted its flag in the town .
Airstrikes south of Kobani destroyed a support building of the militants and two of their vehicles, the U.S. Central Command said. The airstrikes also hit two groups of Islamic State militants and damaged a training camp, reports The Washington Times.
The U.S. Central command also said that Kurdish militia still had control over most parts of Kobani and were defending the city against the Islamic State onslaught.
However, the Pentagon has said that the Islamic State may still seize Kobani since air strikes alone were not enough in preventing the militants' advance.
Meanwhile, Turkey's foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, played down the possibility of Turkish military becoming involved in the fight to save Kobani.
"It is not realistic to expect Turkey to conduct a ground operation on its own," he said at a news conference with visiting NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg. "We are holding talks. ... Once there is a common decision, Turkey will not hold back from playing its part," he said, reports Reuters.
He believes that the U.S. administration took a considerable amount of time before deciding to act against the events taking place in Syria.
