NFL Draft Update: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Select Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota headed for Tennessee
As predicted by the majority of mock drafts, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Florida State's Jameis Winston as the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft.
After the selection, Winston, who stayed home in Alabama, tweeted:
Winston has been viewed as the top prospect despite his history of behavioral and personal issues off of the field. While at Florida State, Winston was accused of sexually harassing a former student. Winston was never charged in the case.
Other then this rape accusation, Winston was also cited for shoplifting crab legs. Winston recently spoke about that incident and claimed that he thought they were free to take. Regardless of these issues, the Bucs coach Lovie Smith had said previously that he and the team are ok with Winston's history.
Before the draft, Winston said to ESPN, "Anyone that wants to take that chance on me ... they're going to be lucky."
Winston is expected to sign a multimillion-dollar contract with the Bucs. ABC News reported that according to the NFL Players Association, Winston could make $24 million in his first four years.
The other top quarterback in the draft, Oregon's Marcus Mariota was selected second overall by the Tennessee Titans.
The draft continues today, May 1 at 7 p.m. ET, at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. Teams will be selecting players in rounds two and three. Each team gets seven minutes per pick in round two and only five minutes per pick in round 3.
The draft can be watch on the NFL Network, ESPN and NFL.com.
