Diamondbacks Archie Bradley Takes a Scary Line Drive Hit to the Face
Everyone at Chase Field cringed when Arizona Diamondbacks starter Archie Bradley was hit in the face by a line drive in the second inning.
At the plate was Colorado Rockies Carlos Gonzalez, who hit an 82 mph changeup directly toward the 22-year-old right-hander. The baseball struck Bradley on the right side of his face, causing him to fall onto the ground. The trainers immediately ran to his side and after some time, Bradley was able to get up and signal to all of the fans that he was conscious. He left the field as the fans applauded.
Although Bradley was able to walk off using his own power, his face started to swell up quickly. Arizona Republic's photographer, David Kadlubowski, managed to take this shot of Bradley:
Bradley also tweeted a picture of his swollen face.
After the game, the Diamondbacks trainer Ken Crenshaw stated that Bradley showed no signs of a concussion. Bradley also received a scan, which revealed slight sinus cavity damage. The club's medical staff is expected to have an update on his medical status by Wednesday.
Bradley talked about the scary event after the game, which the Diamondbacks won 12-5.
He said, "I tried to throw a curveball in there for a strike and I saw the pitch going towards the plate, then I woke up and I was laying down. I got myself together and opened my eyes. I could see, wiggled my feet and the next thing I know the trainers are there. It's part of the game. Obviously you hate to see it. It hurt pretty bad. But I hate it because now I don't know the diagnosis, how bad it is or even if it's bad at all."
Gonzalez spoke with reporters about the line drive as well.
"That is one thing you see once in a while on the diamond that you really wish you never see when you are playing," the outfielder said. "For me as a hitter, it's a nightmare. It's something you don't try to do. Seeing one of those guys going down, especially a guy like him, who is really young and starting his career."
Bradley has a 1.80 ERA so far this season.
