Gotham FOX: There is a superhero in Season 1; EP Heller talks progression of villains
FOX's "Gotham" is already one of the most anticipated shows of the fall. Despite the fact the show's namesake is known for producing one of the greatest superheroes of all time, fans shouldn't expect to see plethora of superheroes.
According to Executive Producer Bruno Heller the hero of the series is actually not commisoner Gordon (Ben McKenzie), the show's main character. The hero's not even a person.
"If there is a superhero in the show, it's Gotham," Heller said at the Television Critics Assoc. press tour according to TVLine. "It's a larger-than-life character. ... Heroes are more interesting than superheroes. Superheroes do the impossible and drama is really about the physically possible. This is about people and people trying to overcome real problems as opposed to trying to learn how to fly."
Heller also discusses the weird time period in the show. As TVLine points out, there are both flip phones and cars from the 1970s.
Heller tells TVLine "it's a mash-up, to use the modern phrase."
"This world is the past, but it's everybody's past. It's a timeless world - it's yesterday, today and tomorrow all at the same time," the EP adds. "That's the time that dreams live in."
Heller also discusses the villains in the FOX series. According to Entertainment Weekly, the villains will progress depending on how fans react to them.
"It depends entirely on one of the joys of TV series-which is you can respond to what pops with the audience or what actor pops," Heller said according to EW. "So the first year is very much about the rise of The Penguin [Robin Lord Taylor] and his titanic struggle with Fish Mooney [Jada Pinkett Smith]. But other characters will be introduced as we roll along through that first season. But we'll respond to what's working and what isn't."
"Gotham" debuts Monday, Sept. 22 at 8/7c on FOX.
