UFC Champion Jon Jones Sought Out for a Hit-and-Run Case
UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is the lead suspect in a hit-and-run case that happened on Sunday. The Albuquerque police department is reportedly searching for the 27-year-old fighter for questioning. No charges have been filed yet.
The police department spokesman Tanner Tixier confirmed to ESPN.com that an off-duty officer was able to identify Jones as he left the scene of the three-car accident in southeast Albuquerque on foot. The police report added that several witnesses saw a man that fits Jones' description fleeing the scene after grabbing a "large handful of cash" from his car.
A pregnant woman in her 20s was involved in the accident and was sent to the local hospital for "precautionary reasons."
The police stated that the vehicle that was left behind was a rental. They found marijuana inside a marijuana pipe. No other drugs were found in the vehicle.
Officers have tried to contact Jones at his new residence in Albuquerque but have been unsuccessful so far.
UFC released this statement Sunday night:
"We are aware that the Albuquerque Police Department is interested in speaking to Jon Jones regarding his possible involvement in a motor vehicle accident. We are in the process of gathering facts and will reserve further comment until more information is available."
Simon Drobik with the police department stated that Jones could be facing a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge and would be liable for the damages to the vehicles as well as any medical expenses.
Jones has an upcoming fight at UFC 187 in Las Vegas on May 23 where he will defend his title against Anthony "Rumble" Johnson.
