Avengers: Age Of Ultron Boycotted in Hundreds Of Cinemas In Germany For Rental Fee Increase
The Avenger's impressive $201m earnings did not stop hundreds of cinemas in Germany from not receiving the newest Marvel movie franchise that opens on April 23 Thursday.
According to The Telegraph, nearly 700 cinemas or 686 theaters in 193 small towns in Germany joined the boycott in not allowing the Marvel blockbuster due to rental fee increased.
From the usual 47.7 per cent given to small-town theaters, this year, Disney charged 53 per cent of the gross ticket sales only for the superhero sequel, The Avengers: Age of Ultron in these cinemas.
"We are worried, particularly about eastern Germany. When prices go up, then we have a serious problem that could force movie theatres to close," Karl-Heinz Meier, a spokesman for cinema advocacy group IG Nord said according to a report from The Guardian.
"Disney will have to do without 686 screens on which the film otherwise would have been shown," he said further saying that some cinemas in the north are willing to accept as much 50 percent charge.
The Hollywood Reporter asked a representative from Disney regarding the said rental fee however the studio rep refused to comment about the situation.
"We don't discuss the negotiations that we are engaged in with our partners in exhibition," their official statement said.
