100-Minute-Old Baby Is UK's Youngest Organ Donor
One baby lived for only two hours, but became UK's youngest-ever organ donor last year, according to bbc.
Doctors at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, quickly transplanted his kidneys just three minutes after he died.
Teddy Houlston died on April 22 last year just 100 minutes after he was born, but he saved an adult in Leeds, according to people.
His parents, Mike Houlston and Jess Evans, from Cardiff, wanted everyone to know about him. They said in a recent interview: "We are so proud of him. He lived and died a hero. It's impossible to explain how proud we are of him."
It began when Jess was 12 weeks into her pregnancy. She was told that one of the twins she was carrying was "fatally ill" with anencephaly.
This is a "rare and lethal abnormality" that does not permit the brain and skull to grow. Hence, babies with the anomaly would either die in the womb, or could be stillborn, or live for just seconds, minutes or hours after birth.
It was a "soul-destroying" news to Jess, but the couple decided not to abort Teddy. Jess said: "We thought that even if we had a moment with him, or 10 minutes, or an hour, that time was the most precious thing that we would ever experience."
They decided to donate his kidneys, as Jess said: "Organ donation was something I've always felt quite strongly about ever since I was a child."
At first, though, doctors were doubtful about a transplant, "because it had never been done before."
But later, the plan was executed, which filled them with joy. "We never doubted him", said the couple.
"He is still very much a part of our family today, we talk of him every day, our children talk of him, our families do, we always remember him, he is with us all the time," Jess added. "Knowing that he was able to do such good, more good than most of us will ever do in our lifetime - it is just overwhelming how proud we are of him."
