NBA Playoffs: Mavericks Rajon Rondo Out Indefinitely due to Back Injury
Rajon Rondo's time with the Dallas Mavericks is coming to an end.
The team announced that the point guard is out indefinitely due to a back injury that he sustained during Game 2 of the playoff series against the Houston Rockets. A source reported, according to ESPN.com that Rondo first hurt his back roughly a week ago but thought that he could play through it.
"He sustained a back injury basically at the 11-minute mark of the first quarter last night," head coach Rick Carlisle said. "He attempted to take a charge on James Harden, hit the ground and from that point going forward probably should not have played any more, but he did. He wasn't able to play his game or play as well as he can play. Today, it's not good, so he is going to seek additional opinions. That's where things are at with him."
Carlisle was also asked if he thought Rondo would sign with the Mavericks in free agency, he replied, "No, I don't."
Due to Rondo's poor performance and lack of enthusiasm in Game 2, many people were speculating that the injury announcement might have more to do with Rondo's attitude than his actual back.
"I understand that the announcement that's been made is going to have different interpretations," Carlisle said. "I am giving you our interpretation of it, and this is fact. From here, we're moving forward. We've got a series to win and we've got to win Game 3 with the guys that are available."
Rondo, who was traded from the Boston Celtics in December, has had a rough time in Dallas. Although he helped improve the Mavericks' defense, he and Carlisle were never really on the right page. Earlier this year in February, Carlisle and Rondo got into a heated argument by the bench after Rondo appeared to have ignored Carlisle's play calls. Rondo served a one-game suspension for yelling back at Carlisle.
The Mavericks also confirmed that forward Chandler Parsons, who has been dealing with a swollen right knee, is out for the rest of the season. Parsons will reportedly explore surgical options.
On the up side, Devin Harris has been listed as probable for Game 3.
The Mavericks are hosting the Houston Rockets on Friday, April 24 at 7:00 p.m. ET. The Rockets currently lead the series 2-0.
