Dr. Oz Could Be Sacked for "Quack" Treatments
A group of top physicians have demanded the removal of celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz from the faculty position at Columbia University for promoting 'quack treatments' to the American public.
The Dean of Columbia received a letter from 10 physicians earlier this week where they have accused Dr Oz of promoting 'miracle' weight loss supplements without any evidence to show the supplements work.
The letter said, "Dr. Oz has repeatedly shown disdain for science and for evidence-based medicine."
The physicians allege that Dr Oz "has manifested an egregious lack of integrity by promoting quack treatments and cures in the interest of personal financial gain."
Dr Oz became a household name when he became a regular guest on Oprah Winfrey's show. He has since been hosting his own program "The Dr Oz Show' for the last 5 years.
Dr Oz had been in the news last year as well when h appeared before the US Senate Panel where he was accused of promoting products that were deemed medically unsound and unreliable. During the hearings, Dr Oz himself admitted that some of the products "don't have the scientific muster to present as fact."
The top physicians who sent the letter to Lee Goldman, Dean of Columbia University include Dr. Henry Miller of Stanford University, Dr. Gilbert Ross of the American Council on Science and Health in New York City and Dr. Joel Tepper, a cancer researcher from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
While Columbia University has remained largely silent on the issue, the New York University in an interview to Associated Press said that the college "is committed to the principle of academic freedom and to upholding faculty members' freedom of expression for statements they make in public discussion."
