Girls HBO Cast Update: Jemima Kirke Reveals Her "Secret" Teen Abortion
Girls' star Jemima Kirke revealed she had an abortion when she was a teenager. Her revelation is part of the recent campaign of the America's Centre for Reproductive Rights (CRR) "Draw the Line" to uphold women's rights particularly in eradicating the 'stigma' among women who terminated their pregnancy.
In the video, as quoted by The Independent, the London-based star said, "In 2007 I became pregnant by my boyfriend at the time. I wasn't sure that I wanted to be attached to this person for the rest of my life. My life was just not conducive to raising a healthy, happy child. I just didn't feel it was fair. So I decided to get an abortion."
Kirke went on with her story saying that she has to skip having anesthesia so she can afford the cost of the painful operation. She also pointed out having suffered emotional stress as to feeling shamed and embarrassed.
"I still see that today, I still see shame and embarrassment around terminating pregnancies and getting pregnant so I have always been open about my stories, always shared them, especially with other women."
In a report from E! Online, the mother-of-two also said that she never revealed the decision to her parents and thus she is the only one who paid for the operation.
"I went to Planned Parenthood in Providence, Rhode island, where I was at school. Because I couldn't tell my mother that I was pregnant, I had to pay for it out-of-pocket. I did have to like, you know, empty...my checking account, what I had in there and get some from my boyfriend."
The actress has always been vocal about her experience and has also told about it in an interview in 2012 with Vulture.
Meanwhile, Girls has casually tackled the issue on abortion in one of their episodes, MSNBC said.
In one episode, Mimi-Rose (played by Gillian Jacobs) had an argument with her boyfriend Adam (played by Adam Driver) as she revealed that she had an abortion even without consulting him. Her decision frustrated him.
