New York Mets Put David Wright on the DL
Third baseman David Wright has been placed on the disabled list due to a strained right hamstring, the New York Mets announced. He will have to remain inactive for at least two days.
Wright, 32, had an MRI Wednesday morning at the Hospital for Special Surgery located in Manhattan and received a cortisone injection. Eric Campbell from Triple-A Las Vegas was promoted. He started at third base in Wednesday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies and went 1-for-5 with no strikeouts. The Mets won 6-1.
"It felt good to get that first knock out of the way and the first RBI," Campbell, who only got around three hours of sleep, said. "I'm a lot more comfortable out there this year than maybe at the beginning of last year, so I'm just going to try to build the confidence up and go from there."
Wright was injured during Tuesday night's game against the Phillies while attempting to steal second. Five pitches after the stolen base, Wright asked to leave the game.
"Part of me's thinking, 'Just go ahead and try to finish this game out and get diagnosed after the game,'" Wright said. "Part of me was thinking, 'If he hits a ball anywhere, I'm going to have a real hard time getting to third base and nearly impossible of scoring.'"
"I'm optimistic that it's gonna be two weeks," he added. "But I don't want to go out and do exactly the opposite of what I just said -- where I go out there and try to rush it because I'm expecting it to be two weeks, then go out there and miss another two weeks because I didn't give it an extra day or two."
General manager Sandy Alderson stated, "The indication was a mild strain last night, and we were happy that the MRI confirmed that. Any time there's a hamstring injury, it's almost an automatic couple weeks. Hopefully this will be a two- to three-week proposition, but you never know. Two weeks would be great, three weeks probably an expectation."
During Tuesday's game, which the Mets won 6-5, two other players were injured as well. Left fielder Michael Cuddyer and shortstop Wilmer Flores were hit on their hands by pitches thrown in the second inning. Both players did not sustain serious injuries.
The Mets (6-3) will host the Miami Marlins (3-6) Thursday at 7:10 p.m.
